The dried-up ink stains could refer to love letters or marriage contracts. In these lines, the whole concept of traditional love is being questioned. This is evident in the lines –Īnd the ink stains that are dried upon some line” Due to the fact that both of them are not tied down by anything (the idea of Free love), it makes him want to stay with her even more. Here, the singer is talking about him falling in love with someone who is as free as someone can get. Certainly, a naïve but hopeful philosophy to live by. A time when it seemed like that love was the solution for everything. A time when people were pro-love and anti-war. Though the wheat fields and the clothes linesĪnd the junkyards and the highways come between usĪnd some other woman’s cryin’ to her motherĪs pointed out by one of the contributors at Genius, it’s necessary to contextualize this song. Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and findĪnd for hours you’re just gentle on my mind It’s just knowing that the world will not be cursing Planted on their columns now that bind meīecause they thought we fit together walking That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bagĪnd the ink stains that are dried upon some line “ It’s knowing that your door is always open Basically, the memories of her are a cushion for his mind and presumably even his heart. It’s something that his mind rests upon when it requires thoughts that are gentle. The title, “Gentle on My Mind” implies that the memory of his lover is a gentle one. It is this love turned into a memory that gives him and comfort and the ability to move forward in his life. In essence, the song is about a long, lost love that stays with the singer as a distant memory. “Gentle on my mind” is a phrase that repeats itself again and again in the song. Campbell even named his sixth album, which contained this very song, “Gentle on My Mind”. In years to come, the same song would be recreated and reperformed by various legends of the music industry such as Dean Martin and Elvis Presley. It is said that he was so awestruck by John Hartford’s original version, that he had to make the song his own. That was when he released his own version of “Gentle on My Mind”. He won four Grammy awards in 1967 itself. That’s when he made it back into the music scene in a thunderous manner. LeBlanc’s most recent full-length is 2019’s Renegade.Released in 1967, “Gentle on My Mind” made garnered a lot of critical acclaims. Pastimes was recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, down the road from where LeBlanc cut his 2016 album Cautionary Tale at Single Lock Studios in neighboring Florence, Alabama. There’s a little extra atmosphere from steel, piano, and even washes of strings, while LeBlanc’s airy vocals add an extra layer of wistfulness compared to the relative warmth of Campbell’s delivery.Įlsewhere on Pastimes, LeBlanc leans into his love of classic rock, covering Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” and the Rolling Stones’ “Play With Fire” along with songs by Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, and Buffalo Springfield. LeBlanc doesn’t mess too much with the arrangement of “Gentle on My Mind,” letting the wheels-in-motion brushed drums and restless acoustic guitar figures carry things forward. The first release from the project is a sweeping cover of “Gentle on My Mind,” originally penned by John Hartford and made famous by Glen Campbell. Singer-songwriter Dylan LeBlanc will look to his musical influences on the new EP Pastimes, due in June.
